HKCU allocates HK$1Mfor Gansu and another HK$1M for Pakistan to support emergency relief work
2010-08-10
UNICEF’s emergency assistance for Zhouqu is anticipated to take place and will provide supplies worthy of US$200,000 (approximately HK$1,560,000) in total including, maternal and child health and care equipment, cold chain equipment for vaccines and 5,000 student kits.
“Destructive floods and mudslides have destroyed countless homes and affected thousands of lives in Gansu. Closely monitoring and assessing the situation, we are especially concerned with the children and women. The Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF is ready to give our full support to the affected regions,” said Irene Chan, Chief Executive of HKCU.
The situation is devastating and young children are the most vulnerable in emergencies. As forecast calls for additional rain in the coming five days, rescue efforts will continue to be hindered by the heavy sludge covering major roads, blocking the movements of vehicles.
On the other hand, Pakistan is facing the worst flooding in more than 80 years by heavy monsoon rains, over 6 million people have been affected, including an estimated over 1.4 million children. Forecasts predict heavy rain will continue to fall for at least the next three days leading assessments and delivery of assistance has been nearly impossible.
The Hong Kong Committee for UNIECF is appealing for additional support from the general public of Hong Kong to help the victims in the disaster through donations.
