UNICEF HK appeals for public support to mobilize urgent response to deadly earthquake in Nepal
2015-04-26
HONG KONG, 26 April 2015 – A devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal with epicenter in Lamjung District (north-west of Kathmandu; south of China border). Nepal government reported 30 out of 75 districts affected in the Western and Central Regions, including Nepal’s two largest cities – Kathmandu and Pokhara. UNICEF is mobilizing an urgent response to meet the needs of children affected by the earthquake in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The 7.8 earthquake has destroyed buildings, cellphone networks are down in many areas and power is out. "The shake was like nothing I have experienced in my 57 years. It was strong and it shook for a long time. Many old monuments, including famous temples and stupas have come down. Many people fear Kathmandu will have a very high death rate,” said Rupa Joshi UNICEF Communication Specialist in Nepal.
UNICEF has been working in Nepal since the 1960s. We are on the ground now and are working to meet the needs of the children, men and women affected. We are keeping our promise to Nepal's children. UNICEF has prepositioned supplies, including water purification tablets, hygiene kits, tarpaulins and nutrition supplies, and is working with government and other partners to meet children’s immediate needs in the areas of water and sanitation, child protection, health and nutrition.
Ms Judy Chen, Chairman of the Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF HK), responds to the Nepal earthquake, “Earthquake of this size can be deadly, toppling buildings, and destroying roads and infrastructure. Forty-two percent of the population in Nepal is under age of 18. They are the most vulnerable in an emergency. UNICEF HK has been closely working with UNICEF Nepal office to improve the lives of Nepali children for many years with the generous support from Hong Kong public. We’re calling on Hong Kong people to continue your greatest support to us so we can respond to the evolving needs of this crisis.”
