UNICEF HK Welcomes Implementation of Breast Milk Bank Practices

17 May 2024, Hong Kong ––Hospital Authority announced the establishment of Hong Kong's first human breastmilk bank at the Hong Kong Children's Hospital. Commencing in 2025, the Hospital will start to prescribe human breast milk to premature and critically ill infants. The program aims to supply all nine public hospitals with neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and collect 600 to 850 liters of breast milk annually to benefit an estimated 450 to 600 extremely premature infants.

Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF HK) welcomes this initiative to help more preterm and critically ill infants, as well as those whose mothers are unable to provide breast milk, thereby transforming the lives of newborns in need, providing them with the best start in life.

As part of our ongoing "7,000 Days of Life" campaign, UNICEF HK is dedicated to nurturing the well-being of children from the prenatal phase through to adulthood. In collaboration with the Health Bureau and the Department of Health, we have initiated the "Say Yes To Breastfeeding" campaign since 2015 to promote the benefits of breastfeeding.   We are hosting “The 2nd Breastfeeding Room Design Competition" with a theme of “Advancing breastfeeding support, setting new benchmarks” inviting designs with incorporation of breast milk donation elements.
