SDG Actioner Challenge Achievement Exhibition 2024 Showcases the Impact of Ethnic Minority Youth in Driving Climate Action

09/12/2024

Hong Kong, 9 December 2024 – Cultural, linguistic and habitual differences empower ethnic minorities to approach challenges from diverse perspectives. Launched by UNICEF HK, the ‘SDG Actioner Challenge’ programme empowers these young individuals with essential knowledge and skills to address climate change and promote sustainable development.

Participants in the programme successfully connected schools and communities to implement a variety of climate action campaigns. The ‘SDG Actioner Challenge’ Achievement Exhibition was held from 16 to 17 November at The Link Sustainability Lab, showcasing projects the participating students undertook and demonstrating how the public could engage in climate action in their daily lives. The exhibition also featured workshops to enhance public understanding of the relationship between climate change, children's rights, and sustainable development.

The opening ceremony was attended by Mr Fong Chung Lun, member of the Advocacy Committee of UNICEF HK; programme sponsor Mr Wei Aiguo, Managing Director of AEON Credit Service (Asia) Co., Ltd.; and venue sponsor Ms Lorraine Chan, Managing Director of Corporate Affairs at Link Asset Management Limited. Ethnic minority students, their advisory teachers, and other youth from various UNICEF HK programmes also joined the ceremony.

The exhibition centred around the theme of ‘Waste Upcycling’, highlighting projects implemented by the SDG Actioners in schools and communities. These projects include transforming food waste into planting fertilizer, creating smart recycling bins to track campus waste, making eco-friendly cleaners from recycled fruit peels, and upcycling plastic waste. The exhibition also unveiled the theme for the upcoming year – ‘Renewable Energy in Hong Kong’ – encouraging ethnic minority youth to propose ideas on promoting the adoption of renewable energy in schools and local communities.

The ‘SDG Actioner Challenge’ programme was launched by UNICEF HK since 2023, focusing on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13): Climate Action, with the aims to motivate ethnic minority youth to bring about changes in their communities, and raise awareness of climate change. Through workshops, field tours and other activities, the programme equips and encourages ethnic minority youth to design climate action projects that promote sustainable lifestyle, cultivate their global citizenship, and empower them to make a positive impact on society, fostering community inclusion.
