Appointment of Judy Chen, Chairman of UNICEF HK as Peace Messenger of UN International Week of Science and Peace

HONG KONG, 12 December 2014 — The Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF HK) is pleased to announce that Chinese Organising Committee of the International Week of Science and Peace (IWSP) has appointed Ms Judy Chen, Chairman of UNICEF HK, as Peace Messenger and has invited her to be the Honourary Member of the 26th Chinese Organising Committee of IWSP to commend her contribution on women’s and children’s development, environmental protection and international cultural exchange. It is the second award to Ms Judy Chen by IWSP following her receipt of the lifetime achievement award, ‘Contribution Prize of International Week of Science and Peace’ last year.
“I am honoured to be appointed as the Peace Messenger and the Honourary Member. It recognizes the contribution of UNICEF HK on the work of children and peace and is a big encouragement to me, my fellow members in the Council and colleagues who have devoted continuously on the work for children. I will certainly dedicate my efforts to fulfilling my role as Peace Messenger and working for children and peace in my various capacities. I hope to ing more happiness to children around the world,” said Ms Judy Chen, Chairman of UNICEF HK.
The opening ceremony of the 26th anniversary of IWSP was held at the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Auditorium in Beijing on 23 December 2014. Recognitions to the organizations and individuals which/who have made important contribution to the promotion of peace and science were presented at the conference. The General Assembly adopted Science and Peace resolution at its 43rd session in 1998, which proclaims the International Week of Science and Peace to take place annually. The General Assembly urged Member States and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to encourage relevant institutions, associations and individuals to sponsor events and activities related to the study and dissemination of information on the links between progress in science and technology and maintenance of peace and security, and urged Member States to promote international co-operation among scientists with the week, so as to encourage applications of science for the promotion of peace.
