Starbucks Hong Kong continues its tradition of spreading love in this festive season with the ‘Starbucks Annual Christmas Red Cup Charity Campaign’, which was kicked off at Fashion Walk, Causeway Bay on 2 December 2011. Being an icon for Christmas surprises and special offers, Starbucks classic red cup also has an important role for the Charity Campaign. From now till 31 December 2011, a giant Christmas Red Cup octopus machine is set up for donation to the Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF (HKCU). Ms Judy Chen, Chairman of HKCU, Mr Gilbert Mo, Chairman of Fundraising Committee of HKCU, Mr Louis Koo, HKCU Ambassador, Miss Amanda S, celeity model, and Mr Andrew Nathan, General Manager, Starbucks Hong Kong were invited to launch the Red Cup Charity Campaign with this year’s theme ‘Light Up Lives For Children’ and called for public’s support.

As the HKCU Ambassador, Mr Louis Koo believed everyone could become Santa Claus by inging all children a warm and joyful Christmas! “When you are planning to buy your friend a Christmas gift, please remember to donate HK$10 to HKCU and become a Santa Claus of children in need in the developing countries! With only HK$10, UNICEF can purchase 107 water purification tablets, each will provide children with five litres of safe drinking water!” A water purification tablet could be the best Christmas gift to these children, not only giving them access to clean water and sanitation, but also helping them stay away from deaths caused by diarrhoeal diseases such as cholera and dysentery. “Why not join hands with HKCU to help these children and at the same time, enjoy different offers by Starbucks this Christmas?”

“Nearly 9 million people are still using unsafe water resources, and most of them are children,” said Ms Judy Chen, Chairman of HKCU. “We are delighted that we can unite with Starbucks Hong Kong, to raise funds through the Christmas Red Cup Charity Campaign, so that we can send water purification tablets to more children in the developing countries. With donation boxes placed in Starbucks stores, we can further engage more public to take this meaningful action - sending the most precious and special Christmas presents to children in need.”

With the success of last year’s ‘Coffee For a Cause’ to raise funds for victims of Sichuan Earthquake, Starbucks Hong Kong would like to contribute to the community every Christmas,” said Andrew Nathan, General Manager for Starbucks Hong Kong. “Starbucks Hong Kong is committed to encouraging partners (employees) and customers to give back to the community through this annual Christmas Red Cup Charity Campaign, and to safeguarding children’s right to survival.”
A giant red cup octopus fundraising machine is placed at Hang Lung Centre, Causeway Bay from now until 31 December 2011. Simply tap on the octopus reader, HK$10 will be donated to HKCU and each donor will receive a Starbucks coupon – with the offer to upgrade or enjoy buy one get one free for Starbucks Christmas beverages.

Inadequate access to safe water and sanitation services, coupled with poor hygiene practices, kill and sicken thousands of children every day and diminish opportunities for economic activities, leading to impoverishment of thousands more. With only $10, UNICEF can purchase 107 water purification tablets that help children to drink water safely.
