UNICEF HK gives thanks to social change partners and aims to hold replacement Charity Run on 19 March 2017

Hong Kong, 20 January 2017—The Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF (UNICEF HK) held the 30th Anniversary Closing Ceremony & Cocktail Reception at the Government House today to show its gratitude to long-serving social change partners and volunteers who have helped promote children’s well-being all these years.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Judy Chen, Chairman of UNICEF HK thanked the volunteers and supporters for their trust in UNICEF. Their contribution in time and knowledge has made UNICEF HK a leading voice in child rights and a strong force in mobilizing funding and resources to support children’s survival and wellbeing around the world. UNICEF HK has raised HK$2.5 billion in the past 30 years.
She also thanked the 3,000 child and youth advocates who have helped reach out to over 100,000 students and promote child rights every year. They have played a strong role as a social change agent in Hong Kong.
Together with the Honourable C Y Leung, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Ms Chen presented certificates of appreciation to volunteers, including:
- The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative Hong Kong Association, a partner of UNICEF HK for the past 25 years, who has been working tirelessly to advocate, protect and promote eastfeeding and contributed to the designation of the Hong Kong’s first baby-friendly hospital this year
- Volunteers of Change for Good, the inflight fundraising programme with Cathay Pacific that has raised over HK$165 million to support UNICEF’s life-saving programmes over the past 25 years
- Volunteers of UNICEF Charity Run that has raised over HK$110 million to support UNICEF’s efforts against HIV and AIDS since its start in 2006

UNICEF HK’s achievements are also highlighted by its commitment to children’s right to participation, as evidenced by the Make A Video project, Young Envoys and Voices of Youth, to name a few.
Reflecting on the efforts made all these years, Ms Chen added, “UNICEF HK looks ahead for what serves children best for tomorrow’s development is not possible without supporting today’s children. Meanwhile, let us not forget a quarter of the world’s children still live in conflict or disaster. We hope you will continue to stand with us, to get involved, to speak out, to volunteer, to raise awareness on important child issues, and raise funds for UNICEF’s global mission. Let us continue to make the change we wish to see, and be the enabler of hope for millions of children around the world.”
At the ceremony, Ms Chen also told UNICEF Charity Run volunteers, supporters and sponsors that the UNICEF Charity Run was expected to be re-scheduled to 19 March 2017 at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and Sunny Bay. The event is in place of the one cancelled last November due to adverse weather and the planning of the details is now at its final stage.
