UNICEF is requesting HK$27 million to meet the immediate and medium-term needs of children and women affected by Chile Earthquake
New York / Hong Kong, 9 March 2010 – At 3:37 am on 27 Feuary 2010 (local time), a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale has struck off the Chilean coast, followed by a tsunami, causing widespread devastation and triggering a humanitarian catastrophe. Early reports indicate a large scale loss of life. The Government of Chile declared six of the country’s 15 regions as “catastrophe zones”.
Children are the most vulnerable in disasters. An estimated of more than 2 million people directly affected by this crisis, approximately half are children, and one fifth are under the age of five. Vulnerable to cold, hunger, disrupted infant feeding practices, water-borne diseases and psycho-emotional problems, children and women in this poverty-stricken region require urgent assistance to be able to return to a normal life.
UNICEF is initiating HK$27 million for humanitarian operation in Chile. The appeal seeks to provide resources to meet the immediate and medium-term needs of children and women throughout the affected areas for the coming six months, mainly on providing child protection and nutrition, education as well as clean water and sanitation.
The Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF would like to appeal for additional support from the general public of Hong Kong to help the victims in the disaster through donations.
